Microsoft's next Windows 10 ｕpdate will fix its most irritating feature - but there's a catch
Microsoft has released a developer preview of its Windows 10 Creators Update , due to be released later this year - and it includes one feature that is likely to be extremely popular.
The new version will allow software ｕpdates to be postponed for up to 35 days, effectively putting an end to the controversial decision to force automatic ｕpdates on Windows 10 users.
The operating system will also be able to tell if the computer's display is in active use, and prevent restarts from occurring mid-task, according to Microsoft.
The ability to delay software ｕpdates is likely to be welcomed by Windows 10 users, many of whom have complained about ｕpdates installing automatically at inconvenient times.
One man's expletive-ridden rant went viral last summer, after his computer started installing the latest software upgrade when he was in the middle of a task.
But there's a catch - not all Windows 10 users will benefit from the new feature.
When the Creators Update goes live later this year, the ability to pause ｕpdates will only be available to people running the Education, Enterprise and Professional editions of Windows 10.
Users of Windows 10 Home edition will be able to take advantage of Microsoft's extended "Active Hours" feature, which allows you to specify the hours you are most likely to be using your computer, to prevent Windows Update from restarting your system automatically.
At the moment, the maximum active length of time you can set is 12 hours, but this will go up to 18 hours with the Creators Update.
However, Home edition users will not have the option to pause ｕpdates outside of this time window.
This is just one of a whole host of features included in the Windows 10 Creators Update. Others include upgrades for 3D modelling, virtual reality support, gaming, and social media.
There's also a new "lower blue light" option that gradually shifts colours to ease the strain on your eyes (and theoretically, help you sleep) when it gets dark.
The Creators Update is currently only available to members of Microsoft's Windows 'Insider' programme, but the public version is expected to roll out in the Spring.
